What in the hell is this ...

... and why is it opening in theaters? (Today, in fact.)

And don't try to throw in a bunch of B-list voice talents (Christopher Lloyd, Jaime Pressly, Cloris Leachman, Cary Elwes, Toni Braxton, Chazz Palminteri) and tell me it's something legitimate.

I just assumed it was a parody trailer of some kind. Surely, that can't be real. Can it?

I didn't see the trailer, only the billboards up around LA. Reading up on it, I've discovered it's written and produced by the guys who brought Teletubbies and Thomas & Friends to American audiences. Apparently, they were inspired by a screening of Madea Goes to Jail of all things -- specifically, how the audience would talk back at the screen. (Wow, that's pretty racist.) They wanted to make a children's movie where the same kind of interaction with the screen would be encouraged.

This does not make it seem any more legitimate, it goes without saying.
